After 18 months of recovering from brain cancer, LaMar team rider Jon McFarland is back and ready to strap into life. We’re stoked he’s back and cancer free. LaMar brand manager Marc Vitelli recently had the opportunity to catch up with him.
MV – Hey Jon, happy new year!
JM – Thanks, same to you.
MV – Let’s jump in and talk about what you have recently gone through, as I know it hasn’t been an easy experience. What type of cancer did you have?
JM – I had “B” Cell Lymphoma in the Central Nervous System, in my brain. I have already done 5 months of chemo and 1 month of GAMA radiation to the brain. You can call me the Incredible Hulk cause that’s what Bruce Banner got before he became the Hulk.
MV – Thankfully you’re now free of this, feeling good and ready to get your shred on again?
JM – So ready. I have a great new mentor in my life now and he’s no other than Mr. Marc Frank Montoya. He has taught me a lot over the past year. Just to get out, shred and have good friends to ride with is all I care about.
MV – That’s awesome. How’d you get into snowboarding?
JM – Honestly, I watched “The Resistance”. I had gone riding one time before but I hated it! Then I watched Jeremy & JP kill it in “The Resistance” and I also watched JP Tomich, The late SGT, Goodale, my boy Bennee, and MFM in “Livin’ Proof”. Those two shred movies inspired me… to ride and I did just that. I graduated High School early and that’s when I met Stevie Bell. We rode every day at Brighton. So proud of him.
MV – You still working on the full sleeve?
JM – Oh yea, I’ve got a lot of work done on it, about 50 hours deep. At least another 20 are needed.
MV – Damn, that’s some serious time in the chair. What’s the theme?
JM – It seems like a lot of people nowadays are getting tats but most people don’t get serious pieces unless they mean something. Mine have no color, all black and gray and they honor particular people in my life and the fight of life. If you want a more in depth meaning, find me and ask me.
MV – Right on Jon, the ink’s going to be sick when it’s done. Any folks you’d like to thank?
JM – Mom, Dad, Gma, brother Cweez, Homies: Dpriest, FlashGordon, FOREMAN, Tika. The Firm: Stevie Bell, MFM, K-mart. Skullcandy: the Andrus family, the Alden family. The LaMar family, so so many others to mention. Also, my main man Mr. Jason Kimball, my mentor and my friend. Its crazy but when you’re hurt WOMEN that you wouldn’t think would be interested in you become interested.
Keep up with Jon on twitter, @JMMLIFE or on his website.
